Theme of the year 2013: \"Diversity Destroyed\"

Berlin has a reputation as a cosmopolitan city - and not for the first time. Berlin was already the world\'s most vibrant metropolis in the \"Golden Twenties\". This diversity came to an abrupt end when the Nazis seized power on 30 January 1933. As part of the theme of the year, Berlin will be commemorating the \"destroyed diversity\" with numerous exhibitions and events in 2013.

Since 31 January 2012, the Deutsche Historische Museum (German Historical Museum) has been showing an exhibition that gives an overview of all the projects and initiatives relating to the theme of the year. Exhibitions and lectures, theatre projects, art installations, and concerts: numerous Berlin institutions are commemorating the diversity that fell victim to the Nazi dictatorship.

The German capital at the height of tourism

With more that 11 million visitors and nearly 25 million overnight stays, tourism in Berlin reached record heights in 2012. According to the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office, the German capital saw a huge rise in international visitors in particular. Their numbers increased by 13.5% to around 4 million. There were 10.6 million overnight stays by people from abroad in accommodation establishments in the city, which represents an increase of 14.5%. The number of visitors from Germany rose by about 8% to 6.8 million.
