U.S. Citizen International Travel up Nearly One Percent in January 2013
U.S. citizen outbound totaled 4.2 million travelers for the first month of 2013
Non-stop Travel up to the Middle East, down to Europe

U.S. travel to overseas markets(1) totaled 1.9 million, up 0.6 percent in January.
Regional results were:
Europe, 563,000 travelers, down three percent
Caribbean, 468,000 travelers, up two percent
Asia, 372,000 travelers, up almost one percent
Central America, 200,000 travelers, up four percent
South America, 125,000 travelers, flat
Middle East, 129,000 travelers, up eight percent
Oceania, 51,000 travelers, up seven percent
Africa, 26,000 travelers, down five percent
U.S. travel to North American markets totaled 2.2 million, up 0.4 percent in January.
Mexico, 1.7 million travelers, down almost one percent; however, air travel (475,000) was up two percent
Canada, 478,000 travelers, up three percent; air travel (185,000) up two percent

U.S. travel to overseas locations accounted for 47 percent of U.S. outbound international travel.
Europe, a 14 percent share;
Caribbean, an 11 percent share;
Asia, a nine percent share;
Central America, a five percent share;
South America, a three percent share;
Middle East, a three percent share;
Oceania, a one percent share, and
Africa, almost a one percent share
North American markets received 53 percent of all U.S. international outbound travel.
U.S. travel to Mexico a 42 percent share; and
Canada almost a 12 percent share.

In 2011 OTTI began to report U.S. outbound travel monthly by all modes, expanding beyond air-only traffic. Total departure travel, inclusive of all modes, to Canada and Mexico is reported in addition to the air-only subtotals. The timing of this report is dependent on receipt of aggregate data from Stats Canada and Banco de Mexico.
